I was interested in reading this book when it was first announced, then worried the excessive number of stellar reviews was going to make me have unrealistic expectations.

Those thoughts left my mind soon after I started the book. Jennette's fast-paced recount of her life enveloped me in her world. Unlike the other autobiographical books I've listened to, this memoir has short snippets as chapters — it felt like Jennette's life was flashing before my very eyes.

It was intriguing to see how much she looked up to her mother as a child, especially given the title of the book. Even as a kid, Jennette seemed to have coddled her mother, which only enabled the undeserved, unhealthy treatment she received. As a person who watched iCarly and Sam and Cat, I found it strangely unsettling to know what was happening behind the scenes from Jennette's perspective. I don't think I can view those shows the same way anymore with this new, heartbreaking perspective of what she was experiencing on set and dealing with as soon as the working day was over.

I'm glad to have picked up this book regardless of my initial opinions, and I'm happy that Jennette is on a healthier path to recovery. I can't wait to see what else she puts into the world.

After reading this, I’m glad she died too

i’ve never really been a fan of memoirs, i often find them to be boring and dull, however for this book that was certainly not the case.
this book was hard-hitting, written in a way that is humorous yet heartbreaking at the same time, which i feel allows readers to connect with her story on a personal level.
the entire book painted a incredibly raw narrative of what it was like for mccurdy to be thrown into such a haunting industry at such a young age, and it also painted a harrowing picture of the mental struggles mccurdy dealt with growing up, a direct consequence of her mother’s controlling abuse. as somebody who was a fan of i carly and sam & cat growing up, it was extremely eye opening to see what was really happening behind the scenes.

it is a rare occurrence that i give a book 5 stars, however this book was without a doubt one of the greatest books i have ever read. it was so incredibly written and i would recommend it to anyone.

beautiful

This book resonates deeply within me, and I hope that we all find love and peace. Eloquently written with dry humor and sarcasm.
