This book was... a rollercoaster, to say the least, of twists and turns that I never expected, of character arcs that were fascinating, and of emotion. Going into this book, I had no idea I would like it this much.

Scythe is set in a future where death has been conquered. There's no disease, war, starvation, even old age. The world is as close to perfect as it can get. But to control the population, measures still need to be taken. Scythes are people who are responsible for chosing how many people die, who those people are, how they die, and then killing them. And our two protagonists, Citra and Rowan, have been selected as apprentices by a Scythe. But only one gets the job no one wants.

Well, I say that no one wants the job, but some people might. And those people are psychopaths who should never get the job. But it raises the problem, how the hell do you compete for a job that you don't, and shouldn't, want? I can't answer that. It's complicating and you'll just have to read the book.

But what I can tell you, is that this book is absolutely brilliant. Not only is the story riveting, the world intriguing and the characters so very interesting, it's also very well written and explores so many topics regarding morality, human nature, death, life, choices... It explores what it is to be human, how people are, how they can be, what they can do. I was completely captivated by all the varying themes and how well those themes were handled.

The characters were also so great. At first my favourite was the Scythe (Scythe Faraday) because of how wise he was, but then it became Rowan. I mean, I liked Rowan from the beginning (he was a great guy), but he's my favourite because he is so freaking interesting. He had a huge and difficult journey that you really should read.

And... and I don't know what else to say. The only problem I had, was when we hit a little section that was difficult to get through. It was about halfway into the book and lasted for about 50-80 pages, and might have been due to the unsavory nature of the shit that was going on. The first half of the book was great and after the bump in the road, things were amazing. I loved the book and highly recommend reading it.

Though if you're the impatient sort, even though there isn't a cliffhanger, I suggest waiting for the release date of the sequel (Nov 21, 2017) to get a little closer. I myself, am going to go crazy. Good luck to me.

Horrifying.

I’m writing this review in the US in 2024 when mass shootings in schools and restaurants are horribly commonplace. Can’t imagine why anyone who lives in today’s world would be entertained by a book (regardless of its premise) that describes training young adults to commit mass murder.
