2 stars. I really struggled with the book. The prose felt over written and chaotic. I found myself being so deep in the slang and “cool future speak” that I didn’t know what was actually going on.
The techobabble did not age well and the characters are boring as hell. If this wasn’t such a classic and on every list I would have DNF’ed it. I went in with an open mind but cyberpunk is not for me.

I have to give the author credit. This novel was well ahead of its time, and as far as I know was the first "Cyberpunk" material written. Unfortunately, that's about as much as I can praise Neuromancer.
As a fan of the genre, I had high expectations diving in to the root of it all. To sum up my thoughts, it was just *so* boring.
I went the audiobook route for this one, as my physical book to-read backlog is tall enough. Often I'll listen to audiobooks while doing mindless chores. Sometimes I'll get immersed in the story to the point where I realize I've been cleaning the same spot on the fish tank for 10 minutes. With this book, I had the opposite problem. The words were hovering around my ears, but wouldn't penetrate through to my conscious attention.
Nonetheless, I tried extra hard to focus and absorbed most of the story. It just wasn't very engaging or enjoyable. I'm the type who is stubborn and won't DNF a book I started, but the thought crossed my mind.
I can see how this novel was innovative and popular in its prime. Since then, other authors have refined and enhanced the genre. I wish I could rate this one higher, but if I'm rating purely based on its merits as an enjoyable story, the best I can do is a 2.75/5.

I wanted to read this as my partner recommended it and having recently read something described as cyberpunk, I wanted to read the arguable novel that sparked the genre.
Toward the end of this I was spellbound and lost in the action. If something disturbed me reading it - like my train arriving at my station - which meant I had to stop, I was genuinely frustrated.
But I must admit, I initially found it difficult to love. I think the first quarter of the book I felt a little lost. That could very well just be me, and I think once I got into it I was hooked.
A high four. Like really high. Like makes me wanna mark other fours down to three kinda four.
I borrow this book from my partner.
