A living, breathing island, with semi sentient flora and fauna is the centerpiece of the story, and that was certainly intriguing, and probably the only saving grace of the book.
The characters are flat, and the MC, flatter still, the prose is inconsistent in its facts and pace, and these cannot create a good haunting. I am, with age, losing all tolerance for teenage leads in my books, and this book reestablishes my loathing. The delivery was lacking, and the lore was weak and the burden of this fell on frail, snowflake shoulders. There were enough pages for the substance to be more inspiring and layered, and yet it fell short.
I had reasonable expectations, and was keenly aware of the hype around it, and despite all that, it all was just so plain.

I really enjoyed the creepy atmosphere of this book but feel it lacked a lot of what I would consider Gothic. There is a general slow build to the horror here but I was never really creeped out like I expected to be. Maybe it's because an island paradise doesn't quite evoke the same level of eerie that an abandoned asylum or manor house does. I did like the main character but her struggle didn't quite have the impact that I look for in a Gothic story either. While I did feel like everything here was good, I just didn't love it... well, except for the fact that there is a black cat named Kylo.

This was okay. It’s basically a YA horror about a teenager, Addie, who travels with her mother and new stepdad on their honeymoon to a special island. Addie is a free diver and recently had a near death experience where she drowned and was essentially dead for several minutes before they resuscitated her. This fact plays a part the entire book and honestly became a little bit repetitive at times as she constantly thinks about her death. The island they’re on is pretty remote and some strange things start happening. This book has paranormal elements as well as some fantastical elements relating to the island. Again, thought it was okay but not my favourite.

The idea for this book felt unique and intriguing, but ultimately the main character was not my favorite and that kind of made me dislike the book. She made a lot of decisions that seemed to lack common sense. And several big parts felt predictable to me.
