I'm going to be completely honest. When I first got this book I was not sure how much I would like it. And the beginning was a little rocky for me I really thought that I was going to rate at lower. But as I kept reading and getting tangled in the plot I really found myself stuck. I am one of those people who Try to come up with the plot twists before they happen just to see if I'm right and while I did get a lot of what happens right it was like only the tip of the iceberg and there was so much underneath that I couldn't have guessed. Even though the beginning is not my favorite the rest of it is so well written nothing feels like a reach nothing feels like it was only there for plot like everything merges seemlessly together and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. Even with 5 stars I will say it's probably not my favorite book of all time but it's definitely a book that I recommend. It kind of gives me older teenage Coraline vibes if it was an island that was "haunted" and not the house. My favorite character was Violet which is not the main character but she was just really cute and really made an impact on the story. And Billy.
5 stars absolutely recommend.

I spent a cold winter’s morning consumed by Nicole Lesperance’s YA horror, The Depths. Seventeen year old Addie’s freediving career, and entire life, is derailed by a diving accident where she is dead for over 8 minutes. Too worried to leave her resuscitated and slowly recovering daughter alone, Addie’s newly remarried mother drags her along on her honeymoon. With a crystalline ocean, lush overgrowth, and a mysterious history, Eulalie Island may just be the key to Addie’s recovery. But the longer she spends among the heady flowers, and with every dive into the alluring waters of the island’s cenotes, the more she feels as if the island wants her back.
Filled with lush descriptions and a cloying presence, The Depths is an atmospheric delight. The flowers–white when Addie first arrives, but pink, then red–were a perfect touch, and I felt myself drawn to the cave systems along with Addie. I was lucky enough to spend time cave diving in Yucatan several years ago, and the beautiful descriptions of the almost glowing waters and light-dappled caves truly brought them to life. It’s unusual for a horror to be set in such a hot, sunlit setting, but Lesperance captures the alien allure of a hungry jungle.
For those who have never trusted idyllic paradise. 5 out of 5 stars.
This book is going to live rent free in my head. The opening line? Chills. The ghost kids? Eerie. The changing flora of the island? creepy. The details to everything, the island, the ghosts, the characters, are so well fleshed out. Learning *what* the island is threw me though a loop and the ending was heartbreaking, heart pounding, and absolutely amazing.

Obsessed with this! A refreshing concept! Tell me how this was perfectly executed, mysterious, creepy and fun. It reminds me of what I wanted from so many other books but this one got me hooked from the first line. The writing is so descriptive and I adore Billy and even Violet. It reminds me of the anime/manga made in abyss whenever she goes swimming. I like that I'm always on edge with the ghosts and the back and forth with him they look like real living corpse.

Not many books have hooked me on the first sentence, but this one did, and the story became increasingly interesting as it progressed.
The story follows Addie, a competitive free diver who, on one dive, dies and is brought back 8 minutes later. She can't dive as she heals from this both mentally and physically, and is dragged along to her mother's honeymoon to an island that is only inhabited by the family of the caretaker. The island seems alive, and in a manner of speaking, it is the connection it has with its history and the ghosts of two Victorian girls tied to a boy named Jonah. Addie, with the help of the caretaker's son Billy, focuses on setting them free of the island, but it comes at the cost of losing themselves. It's hard to write this without spoiling much, so I hope everyone reads this book as a quick palette cleanser to other genres. It was a genuinely enjoyable experience!

After a diving accident, Addie accompanies her mother and stepfather on their honeymoon to Eulalie Island. The remote island is home to exotic plants and lush blooms, strange insects and animals, a thrumming heartbeat that threatens to swallow visitors whole. As Addie begins to hear voices calling her name, she finds herself ensnared by the restless spirits who roam the island.
This novel is gorgeous and atmospheric with incredibly compelling and eerie descriptions. I could picture the vines and sickly-sweet flowers closing in, suffocating, a clear parallel to the moment Addie drowned during her diving accident. Unfortunately, aside from that, there isn't much to the plot. The ghosts trapped on the island aren't particularly interesting and I simply didn't feel invested in their story. Honestly this novel is more about the vibes than the plot and that's okay, it wasn't for me though.
