Read this for my Greek and Roman Lit class. It was okay, I find Virgil’s writing to be profound and superior to the Iliad but only because he had the advantage of editing. The story itself was not thoroughly developed due to Virgil’s death and that is a disappointment. I enjoyed book 6 the most, where Aeneas travels to the underworld, which made me think back to the time I read Dante’s Inferno (I could see why Dante was a Virgil fanboy). It was also interesting to see parallels from the Iliad. Other than that, it was lacking and a bit of a droll most times— not to mention the constant blatant Augustus Caesar praise, though I don’t blame Virgil, but was the mention of the Roman Emperor every 2 seconds really necessary?

(Ok so technically I didn’t finish the Aeneid because the course only requires we read half of it, but we read summaries of the rest so here it goes.)
The Aeneid is primarily a work of propaganda rather than one of fiction, and it really shows in parts. Not to say that it doesn’t have artistic merit or that the tale of a man driven entirely by destiny isn’t an interesting one, but there’s an awful lot of lapsing into speeches about Rome’s glorious future that sort of kill the vibe. I’m not sure what sort of person reads the Aeneid for the joy of the story rather than a historical artefact, but I’d like to meet them.

This was required reading for my Ancient Greece and Rome class. I was not looking forward to reading it in the first place, and I hated every second of reading this.
