This one really kept me on my toes! Just wasn’t a fan of the rather abrupt and ambiguous ending. 3.5 stars rounded up because I honestly did not have high expectations for Ashley’s debut novel and was pleasantly surprised!
Two stars may seem harsh when I didn’t hate the book, but I also did not want to reach for it. It’s not a book I’ll remember in a few months or give as a recommendation. I think it was well written enough, but I do wonder if the praise would be this strong if an unknown author wrote this. The story itself could’ve been really interesting, but I felt like there were so many plot holes and things that just didn’t make sense. I also feel like it was repetitive and dragged out the slow parts and rushed through the parts I actually wanted to read more about. The pacing of the story was totally off and the big reveal came a little too early and it felt like we moved on too quickly. I don’t know if I would have felt this strongly if it didn’t end the way it did. I HATE when books end like this. I don’t think it’s clever, I think it’s lazy!!
