As I was reading this book I started to notice how close this seemed to the JonBenet Ramsey case and after finishing I looked back at others’ reviews and saw that everybody else pretty much said the same thing. I tried to see if the book was inspired by this case and I missed it but it wasn’t mentioned anywhere. It bothered me that she was using this case and not even giving it mention.
I was intrigued by the first few twists and turns but ultimately it became too much and became too unbelievable. It was very obvious that she was trying way too hard to make it unpredictable. I also found the writing style to be slightly boring and I found myself skipping past a lot of unimportant details (long explanatory paragraphs or pages that said simple things). Overall a quick read but I was not a big fan.

I have to admit, when I saw Ashley Flowers’ name I had to Google if she was the same person behind the Crime Junkie podcast, and when I realised she had written a book I knew I had to pick it up right away. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
The story takes place twenty years after the mysterious death of January Jacobs, whose killer was never caught. Margot, who was January’s childhood neighbour and friend, has now grown up to become a journalist. She returns to her hometown to care for her uncle, who has dementia, only to find history repeating itself when another girl, Natalie, goes missing. The case seems tied to January’s death, and Margot becomes determined to uncover the truth and bring justice to both girls.
The mystery itself was gripping and fast-paced. I thought I had it all figured out but I was wrong. The twists and turns kept me on edge, questioning every detail, and the final revelation genuinely took me by surprise.
The only part I was not pleased with was the ending. I was flipping through the last pages in disbelief, wondering how it could be left hanging like that. I needed closure, but the open ending kept me awake long after I had finished reading, still thinking about whether she managed to escape or not. What struck me even more was the epilogue from the killer’s point of view. The mix of betrayal, guilt and cold calculation in his thoughts was chilling, and the way he chose to deal with what he had done made the whole situation even more terrifying.
With that being said, this was a fast-paced and addictive thriller. Even with the ending leaving me desperate for answers, I could not put it down, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a mystery that keeps you second-guessing right until the very last page.
