I'm not normally a historical fiction person, but this book is amazing!
Graphic: Racism
3.5 rounded down
Didn’t feel like it got a larger central goal until the end. Literally, the whole thing was build up. I’ll read the next one because the final 10% of this one was strong enough for me to want to know what the next book will have.

Why do we have endless streams of same ol’ zombie flicks when we could have Dread Nation?!?! I loved this book! A few repetitive phrases/descriptors did not at all detract from how great this alt-history, zombie tale is
A world that highlights how everyday racism can be more horrific than zombies.
Read this as part of my 2022 reading challenge. I did not go into it expecting much, but this book really surprised me. The author's take on historical fiction meets zombie apocalypse was brilliant. I really enjoyed the writing style and the main character is not only likable, but believable. I'm looking forward to the second book.

Really well done historical fiction zombie novel with dark and heavy topics that are handled quite well throughout. The pacing struggled and I really wanted more of the backstory and the outside world, but I still enjoyed it and I’m glad I stuck through the slower parts.
This story deals with some potentially very dark material - an alternate United States where the dead started walking at Gettysburg, and the Union and Confederacy decided to fight the shamblers instead of each other. But of course, while slavery is technically illegal, racial oppression is alive and well, as black people and Native Americans are required by law to attend combat schools and train to fight the dead. Many white people still yearn for the way life was before the dead rose, and politicians cover up just how dangerous the dead are in order to stay in power.
It wasn’t as dark as it might have been, largely due to the protagonist: Jane McKeene is smart, snarky, and has both a sound instinct for survival and a soft spot for her friends and chosen family. I laughed out loud at her tart commentary at multiple points.
I listened to the audiobook, and Bahni Turpin was *amazing* as the narrator. Highly recommended.

Enjoyable. Be in a good headspace before reading. Some parts get a bit heavy. Loved the backdrop of zombies; the undead is one of my favorite horror tropes and I was more than excited to read about them in a time period like this. I feel this is very unique and better written than those historical horror movies that feature zombies. My only thing is some parts were a bit slow and I thought the zombie horror could've been upped a bit more than what was given but I recommend this nonetheless.
