The whole zombie space isn't my usual genre, but a friend recommended this book... And here we are. So, despite my lack of interest, I looked forward to hearing this story.

I can't really put my finger on why I didn't enjoy this book more. I got a bit into it but after a while it became a "hurry up and finish this" type read instead of reading because you're truly enjoying it.
The basis of the story is very interesting....what if the dead rose during the American civil war? There's no explanation for why they rose, which I think in this case adds to the horror of things. There's no government or scientific conspiracy, at least not yet, this is the first in a series so maybe it will be explained in a later book. There were a few reveals that weren't really that interesting, there were a couple of twists about certain characters that I either saw coming or didn't care about.
The letters home are a nice touch at the start of the chapters. Each adds a bit of humour to the start of each chapter as we see the flowery untruths Jane is telling her mother.
The brief bit of history at the end is really interesting...the author mentions that there really were "re-education centres" for native Americans in the 19th century, except they were for making them "civilised" instead of teaching them to fight zombies (or shamblers as they're called in this book).
I had an issue with the lucky penny used throughout. Every time something happened and that stupid penny was mentioned I just got annoyed! I realise I was reading a book about a zombie hoard, but the whole lucky penny that got cold when she was in danger just seemed too superstitious for my liking.
Overall, I think the book felt like a slog.

this just confirmed: i would not survive the zombie apocalypse.
more importantly, this book explores how oppressive systems still thrive in such dire circumstances

I really enjoyed this story. The premise alone was very interesting and well thought out. Were a zombie apocalypse to happen during the civil war I think this is exactly how it would have played out (with the black people basically becoming human shields for the white people). I will have no trouble recommending this book to students. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.
