Perfect YA dystopia, where stakes are real and ever-present. Alternate history that doesn’t shy away from the ugliness of truths; horrors often lie with the living, not just the walking dead. Characters are wonderfully imperfect. Excited to read the sequel.

I went into this book with super high expectations because the premise just sounded so cool. It was a good story, but it felt like there was something missing. I kept waiting for a twist that didn’t come, I suppose. A character who turned out to be the bad guy.

Or some deeper evil lurking beneath Summerland. And what were the Shamblers doing in a cage underneath the town? Either I missed that or it wasn’t explained well. Finally, I understand the love storyline is supposed to play a big role in the second book, but it felt like it was just thrown in the first book and there was very little setup for that.

All in all, great premise and imagery, but I found the conclusion lacking in excitement.
