I typically stay away from the romance genre because like Gus, I hate happily every afters. I feel like in strictly romance books the characters are always forced together and everything ends up too perfect and concise in the end. THIS BOOK however while it still had its stereotypical happily ever after moment at the end (hence the -.1 point deduction), it still had me invested in the characters the whole time. The character development was incredible as I actually got to know January and Gus as people before I knew them as a couple. It was a perfect amount of slow burn where you obviously knew they were going to end up together just not how it was going to pan out. The few side characters had personalities and development as well. I really appreciated January’s character and how human she was especially when dealing with grief and finding out about her dad’s second life and the feelings associated with that. Never in my life did I think I would be annotating a romance book but I have Emily Henry’s genius to thank for that.

I really liked this book, but it made me cry a lot and left me feeling a little sad, even at the end. It makes me think about how hard life can be.

My favorite part was the sub plot about the writing of the books

Weakest of her books imo. Didn't quite click with the main leads alongside not enjoying the last 3rd or so of the book. Not too bad overall tho.

after how much i loved happy place, i decided to start reading the rest of emily henry’s romance books and started with her very 1st one: beach read.

beach read was an emotional and heartwarming book. i was rooting for the happily ever after of our two main characters, january and gus, till the very end.
along with that, my heart hurt as we learned more about them and their storylines.

however, the reasoning for the 4 stars rating was because although i did overall find myself engrossed in our two main characters storylines and the plot, there were some times where i did feel it dragged a bit and got bored a few times here and there. but overall, i loved this book.
