i didnt love the characters as much as i thought i would, and it took me a while to come along to gus as a character, but overall loved the setting of this, the fourth wall element of reading a book about characters writing a book, the stories of the books they were writing, and the conflicts - it all felt very real and had me hooked!
5 stars!!! finished this book with tears in my eyes. am i sucker for enemies to lovers? absolutely. emily henry does such a mesmerizing job writing dialogue and emotion and relationships, and i am once again in awe of her talent. she truly doesn’t miss :)

this book was so white and one dimensional. i didn't care about the characters. january was so annoying the whole time and i didn't like her. the author criticized books about white people and then write a novel with one unimportant side character of color. the book was so uninteresting and uninspiring.
Emily Henry is very good at creating realistically complex, deep characters. People We Meet On Vacation had the perfect balance of plot, heat, humor and heartbreak and Beach Read lived up to these expectations. I wanted to wrap January and Gus up in a big hug with every difficult moment they had to face while simultaneously hassle them for pulling a full Walk to Remember and falling in love anyways. I’m very much a January at my core so she really resonated with me.
