The novel opens with a stranger arriving at a mansion house. Making his way around the house, he enters through French doors and discovers a woman in the presence of a man in a wheelchair. The man has been shot dead, yet rather than calling the police immediately, the visitor sets about creating an alibi for the woman. The police are then called, and their investigation begins.
From this, apparently simple beginning, it soon becomes clear that almost everyone in the household, including the servants, had both motive and opportunity to fire the lethal shot. Maintaining the fast-pace of Christie’s play, Charles Osborne weaves a story that quickly introduces the characters and presents the reader with several plausible scenarios.
Although fairly short, I very much enjoyed this novel. For me, it had two main strengths: The first, that Osborne remains true to Christie’s original script. There are no unnecessary embellishments, and it is written very much in the style of Christie. Secondly, that The Unexpected Guest was written at a time in Christie’s career when she had experienced both huge success, and perhaps some disappointment, with how audiences received her plays. Her choice in delivering this play, where the ending is not in any sense a ‘traditional’ one, shows much of the strength of character that made her both a popular public figure, but also a person who was regarded with more than a little reservation by some of those closest to her.

A fantastic murder mystery and a page-turner. You can't stop yourself until you reach the end to know who is the murderer. Also, i love Agatha Christie that she throws subtle clues all over the book.
