This book...this boooooook! SOOOOOOOOO good!!!!
*****SPOILER ALERT****
From the beginning I had a feeling that the person who killed Richard was either Jan (because he had the mental and emotional capacity of a child, and because he seemed anxious to kill Richard) or Starkwedder (because a stranger willingly integrating himself into a murder just seemed way too suspicious). As someone who has read and watched a lot of mystery/thriller books I had a feeling that Starkwedder was actually MacGregor (the father of the boy who was killed by Richard). Agatha did a pretty good job of trying to convince the reader that there were other murder suspects, of course practically everyone had a motive.
As the story progressed I became more convinced that the murderer was in fact Starkwedder and that Jan was just there as a distraction, I mean it was really too obvious especially when he "admitted to killing Richard".
When Starkwedder started to say how easy it would be for someone to fake their death, I screamed out in excitement because I knew he was talking about himself. Then he finally admitted to being MacGregor, I was absolutely beside myself.
Excellent book!! Can't wait to read her other works.

(Audio) This was unexpectedly great - interesting cast and characters, and a plot full of twists. Even without a leading detective, the story held itself together remarkably well and it was very well paced. The ending caught me off guard, brilliant!
The Unexpected Guest is one of Christie’s plays turned novel by Charles Osborne, and it’s the second such play/novel that I’ve read by this duo. Yes, as others have said, you can definitely tell it’s a play, as all the action occurs in the same room, or just off this room, but it certainly didn’t deter my enjoyment of the book…er, play… I loved it!
As per usual with Christie’s stories, my imagination ran the gamut when it came to the murder suspects. It seems everyone involved had motive, and at one point I suspected them all. And for me it’s always the same—the twist at the end that I did not see coming gets me every time. Only this time, I had a sneaking suspicion and was proven right. Well, sort of. Out of all the Agatha Christie novels and short stories I’ve read (and I’ve read nearly all of them), I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve guessed right!
The Unexpected Guest was an original Christie play, written by the author and not dramatized by someone else nor adapted from one of her novels. Coming on the heels of a previous failed play (Verdict), it was a success and ran for eighteen months in London. It is considered one of her best plays and demonstrates the truth that seeing is not always believing.

Veterans of Christie's ouvre may see the twist coming, but it's still an absolute corker.
I read this while stranded with a flat tire. I have liked other Agatha Christie books but and some elements haven't aged well, of course. Still, this one isn't one that would have held my attention if I had not been left with nothing else to amuse myself with while I waited.
This adaptation is very much like stage directions, but what a good story
mysterious
medium-paced
This was so good ahhhhhh.
This is why I don't pick up an Agatha Christie novel, once I finish one I crave for more and I cannot seem to stop.
The Unexpected Guest was brilliant. The characters were so well written and the mystery ooooohhhhh.
I thought I figured out the culprit but uh oh you donot play with the queen huh?
