Although I had rated the first book of the trilogy a 2.5, this second book was one that changed my mind about the series. The second book is written through the POV of Jeremiah and Belly, and it was nice to have that perspective added to the novel.

I thought that Jenny Han had done a fantastic job exploring the layers of grief and how it comes out in different ways through every character that was grieving over the death of Susannah. The addition of the fight between the two brothers and father was enough to shed tears and was incredibly well done. I also enjoyed the dispute between Belly and her mother. The slap really tied in the aspect of how every character was out of wack due to their imminent grief. I will admit this novel drew multiple tears and was incredibly satisfying in comparison to the previous book.

Also F**K Conrad during that prom scene, I was literally fuming ...

This is a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the painful transition from adolescence to adulthood. Jenny Han masterfully captures the raw emotions of Belly, who is grappling with the absence of Conrad and the shifting dynamics of her relationships. The novel delves into the complexities of grief and first love, painting a vivid picture of heartbreak and longing.

Han's writing is both evocative and relatable, drawing readers into Belly's world with its sun-drenched beaches and bittersweet memories. The alternating perspectives offer deeper insights into the characters' motivations, adding layers of complexity to the narrative. As Belly navigates her feelings for both Conrad and Jeremiah, readers are forced to confront the ambiguity of love and the challenges of making difficult choices.

3.75/5

I really enjoyed this book but reading it in college changed things for me. For one the lack of communication is astounding, but they are all like 16-18ish which makes sense. I also remember liking Jeremiah more when I was younger. I don’t think I realized how he is like crazy, a little manipulative, and tries to blame everything on Conrad. I just hate how much his POV kills him for me. From Belly’s POV I think he is so sweet and he definitely is hardcore grieving in this book, which I understand. However, the Conrad hate from him is so sad and I hate that he feels that way. Jeremiah could be such a sweet character and I love how much he cares for Belly and their friendship.

A wonderful relatable series. Belly and Jeremiah were cute together. But Conrad is the most cute.
