A bizarre, creative, and original story thick with paranoia, religious mania, and deceit. Just when you think you’ve figured out what’s going on, the incredibly nihilistic and twisted plot keeps surprising you in a very engaging way. Despite the characters being poorly fleshed out and PKD’s evident skewed view of women, the creativity, twists, and suspense kept me hooked.

2 stars. The characters here are fairly poorly fleshed out, as the book focuses more heavily on character-environment interactions. These interactions are quite strange, and unfortunately remain a mystery throughout almost the whole book. The plot was rarely engaging. The twist ending was perhaps the best possible ending to this novel, but still feels like a cop-out.
