It's been a while since I've read a vampire novel. And this did not disappoint. I listened to it on audiobook, and though I prefer to read, I felt like the narrators added to the story.

The plot twist at the end was unexpected, and my heart broke for the FMC.

But the build-up I thought was good.

My only frustration was that I struggled to keep track of some of the less prominent characters that turned out to be significant in the end. This somewhat interrupted the flow of the story for me.

Spice 2.5/5
Plot 4.75
Book boyfriend: This is difficult because of the plot twist, but the for the most part 90% maybe a 3.5/5

This was such a good novel! I couldn't put it down. I was genuinely very enamored with this vampiric world and how Oraya fit into it as a human/not human (since she doesn't really consider herself human). I was glad that her father, Vincent (honestly a very weirdly normal name), clearly loved her. I was worried that by the end of the book I'd hate him when I found out he'd been manipulating her. In a way, he was, but in other books when this is true, the person doing the manipulating doesn't usually care for the MC or regret what they did. You could tell in the story that Vincent truly loved Oraya and wanted the best for her, even though he didn't tell her who she was to him. I also really enjoyed Rhaine as a character. He was very sincere and was clearly so in love with her. I'm glad that even though he lied to her he clearly would die for her, and was very sincerely apologetic about what happened. I'm excited to see how their stories end.

One of the best and most creative vampire story I've read!

I love vampires, simple as that, and I loved how Carissa expanded their mythology on the book. It's like a mix of th  hunger games arena, with a kingdom structure similar to underworld movies,  with lots of magic.
Although we have humans and vampires, this is not our world, it's a world of other Gods and their domains,  the vampires don't need to hide, they're just as common as human.
Oraya, the main character, is fierce and badass, and yet, relatable and charismatic. Being the only human amidst the vampire kingdom, she trusts no one and its ready to kill for her life. She also wishes a better life for humans.
The growing tension comes to its clímax on an impressive plot twist in the end. I barely notice the length of the book, I craved for more and can wait for the sequel.
I particular loved the way Carissa presents the world, without those tiring and gigantic paragraphs giving contexts, exposing ans explaining in details. Instead, she SHOW us throughout the book like pieces in a puzzle forming the picture bits by bits. Don't be fooled thinking might be confusing or lacking, she master it in a way that makes sense and we understand what's going on through an engaging narrative.
I couldn't put it down. Can't wait what will happen next!
