I loved this book! It’s one of my favorites in a long time. The characters were so alive, and the sense of place was strong. I was swept into the exquisite world of the Cardews right alongside Lou. I also found myself rereading certain sentences and passages simply because they were so beautifully written. I will definitely come back to this one in the future.

This is my first review since getting the Goodreads app, and I’m so happy I can say my first book was great! The way Laura Wood writes is AMAZING. Even though this book isn’t my usual genre (I usually read non-realistic fiction type books) it was still a great read! My favorite part of the book has to be the ending (I’m not going to spoil anything, don’t worry). It really surprised me in the best way possible. Although I love the book, I still think Robert (the love interest) could have had a little better character development throughout the book. But overall this book was great and I would totally recommend it to anyone interested :)

I should have known I would not enjoy this as much as I Capture the Castle or The Great Gatsby, both of which this book was compared to in the blurb. I wouldn’t say it’s too sweet, because I was looking for a wholesome read, but it’s sweet in a banal, bland way. When the characters feel like other characters from other books combined in a blender instead of people in their own right, you know the book isn’t worth reading.

Well, I enjoyed this VERY much. It’s one of those books where you are prettttty sure it will all work out okay, but there is just enough narrative tension to keep you hooked! The story is set in 1929 Cornwall, where a teenage girl finds refuge in the library of an abandoned house—at least until the Bright Young Things who own it come back and she gets sucked into their whirlwind. The story of a poorer person getting seduced by the wealthy lifestyle of a new friend is not a new one by any means, but I liked the characters here a lot and the way the story depicted friendship (and ambition!). And I was super here for the various romances! My only minor complaint was that the narrative voice sometimes over-explained things. But in general, this was very cute. A-.

this book could’ve been 5 stars, but the author did not execute the plot as well as they could have. i did really like this book, and it was a nice quick read (also slightly felt like a rip off of pride and prejudice)

I felt like living in the great gatsby universe like I felt like belonging to that world.
It's literally the great gatsby but with the young version.
I LOVED THIS BOOK!
For sure, I'll read the sequel!!

Hmm...
