Cliche tropes of coming of age, youth, etcetera but a really nice plot. To be honest the protagonist is a bit "not like other girls" which is a common trap for 'strong' female characters, but I liked her genuineness and how clear her motivations were. Particularly liked the subplot between her and her sister -- the conflict there was necessary for her growth. Overall an enjoyable read.

3.5 stars. just really solid, the prose was sparse but lovely at times. yeah it was good!

Cute! Great Gatsby-vibe!

The writing is amazing and lyrical which creates a beautiful atmosphere. I am defiantly reading under a dancing star which I have reserved at my library

So far 2018 has been my year of historical fiction. After spending my life barely reading any, it now seems I can't get enough!

A Sky Painted Gold by @lauracwood is the perfect summer read. As many of you may know, Ireland has been having a bit of a heatwave recently. The scorching temperatures have been perfect for relaxing in the shade with a cold drink and this beautiful novel.

This YA gem is set amidst the Gatsby-esque glitz and glamour of the roaring '20s. It tells of 17-year-old Lou as she prepares for the wedding of her older sister Alice and onwards throughout her summer of discovery in her once sleepy Cornish village. (There may also be some romance but I like to keep things spoiler-free around here 😉). I honestly could not get enough of this story, so much so that I read it in one afternoon!

I'm excited to see what else Laura Wood has in store for us!

Many thanks to @scholastic_uk for sending me a free proof copy of A Sky Painted Gold.

Beautiful romance.

3.5 stars (as of May 2020, 4 stars).

I think the best way to describe this book is as a mixture of I Capture the Castle and The Great Gatsby. It has all the rural English charm and young but strong female lead of ICTC, and all the glitz and glamour of the roaring twenties that is found in TGT. It definitely met my expectations as a summery, easygoing read.

Lou, a girl from rural Cornwall, finds herself thrown into the glamorous world of the Cardew siblings who appear to inhabit the old, mysterious house across the causeway. But as Lou gets swept up in their world, can she stay true to her heart?

Although predictable at times, I did enjoy this book. The author built up a complex character who is immersed into a totally new and dazzling world that the reader can't help but be drawn into as well, but also showed that the grandeur is not all it seems; beneath the surface there is more to what meets the eye. It is an easy, summer read with Gatsby vibes that I found myself keeping interest in.
