I loved the easy banter between Lou and Robert, and I basically loved Lous attitude. She wanted to be part of these interesting peoples lives, but it wasn’t for their money and she was grounded and herself the whole time.

The ending seemed a little convenient but it was the right ending.

Lou thinks of the Cardew house as hers. Sitting on an island of it's own, the house has been abandoned for some time when she decides to explore both the island and the house. Discovering orchards full of delicious fruit and a library full of books, she can't help going back and feels more at home there than at her own house. Eventually though, Robert and Caitlin Cardew come back to the house for the summer, to get away from London afer losing both their parents.
As her friendship with the Cardew siblings grows, Lou is drawn into the life of glitz and glamour, parties and champagne, and she really doesn't want to go back to her sleepy village life. But everyone has secrets of their own and despite the easy way the Cardews live, even they have difficulties that Lou doesn't realise.
Lou is a wonderful character, I absolutely loved her slightly sarcastic humour. In fact, I'm a little bit in love with all the characters, even the ones I thought I would dislike at the start.

Seventeen year old Lou can generally be found sneaking up to the famous and empty Cardew house to snuggle up with a book and an apple by the fireplace. The house has been empty for years and its the perfect spot to be alone. Until one day, the Cardew siblings show up to spend the summer at the home. Lou is quickly brought into their inner circle and experiences a life very unlike her current one. A life of money, and parties galore. As she grows closer to the siblings, Lou begins to wonder if what the show the world is a facade for their true feelings, hopes, and situations.

If any of you listen to the bad on paper podcast you have definitely heard Becca talk about this book! Their book choices are hit or miss for me (sorry The Idea Of You) so I had purchased this one on Becca’s recommendation, but then it sort of got lost in my tbr. When she mentioned it again on a recent episode I knew it was time to dive in. I loved this book. I felt like I was falling into a slump in the beginning of January but this is one of the books that slammed that slump to a halt. I just loved Lou. She was such a real and beautiful character, and I love watching her get wrapped up into a completely different world, but at the same time, come into herself and realize what she really wanted out of life. The Cardew siblings were exactly what you would expect of wealthy children left to their own devices after the loss of their father, but that made them so enticing. I could imagine the scenes in my head as I read which is always a great experience for me while reading a book.

This was such a charming and lighthearted read! I listened to the audiobook and found myself smiling constantly at the charming banter between characters. Each character was uniquely likeable and the MC’s journey of introspection and independence felt natural. The setting too! 1920s parties mixed with more quaint life in a Cornish village. So dreamy.

A very cute read that I enjoyed. Not a very deep substance to some of the characters, but they are lovable.
