Another impressive installment from Samantha Shannon in the Roots of Chaos world. An incredibly long epic with multiple character perspectives but I was intrigued and connected to the story throughout. Also had absolutely no problem following what was going on despite the complexity. World building and character building are fantastic, even for characters who are not narrators. The diversity of the characters is refreshing - I love that Tunuva is in her 50's. Can tell SS's skill with epic fantasy writing has grown since Priory (which she does say herself - this being her favourite in the Roots of Choas collection). The narration on the audible format is also great. Strongly recommend.

Good book, I just wasn't in the mood for it. Will try again another time.

This tops the cake as the longest traditionally published book I’ve ever read, at a whopping 868 pages, where my normal length is around 500. And I must say, its length did it justice. With a smaller font (that doesn’t completely overwhelm the reader), a story from multiple POVs undergoes. If you aren’t used to epic-style works, the book can seem overwhelming, but after the intro, it is understood clearer.

I loved all the characters in this. I love the themes of motherhood and sacrifice, how the political and religious landscape of a region can make communication frustrating or impossible. I hate (and love) the ideas of religions being built on lies, and yet, it can’t be dismantled right away—the people still need something to believe in. And on that note, simultaneously, the danger of letting that lie spread. ADOFN speaks on, and perhaps even criticizes, bloodlines —those from whom we descend. I can’t wait to see this world evolve in the next two installments.
