"Had our hearts really become so numb that we needed dead bodies in order to feel the beat of compassion in our chests? Who am I if I need to be shocked back into my best self?"

#RashadIsAbsentAgainToday

I had originally put All American Boys on my "To Read" list back in early 2017, and I am so disappointed that I didn't read this sooner, but so incredibly grateful that I finally picked it up. I truly think that this book should be required reading for high school students (along with The Hate U Give, Dear Martin, and several others) because it would likely serve them far better than another reading of The Scarlet Letter or Romeo and Juliet.

The alternating POVs between Quinn, an "All American" white boy, and Rashad, a Black ROTC student who is brutally beaten down by a police officer, serves as an eye-opening discussion starter that is highly appropriate for today's teenagers. In a world of white privilege, implicit bias, and police brutality, All American Boys just might be the catalyst that will open the minds and hearts of young (and old) people to start paving the way for a better future.

"I do believe we can do better, be better. But we can’t hide behind fear. We can’t tuck truth between the cushions of comfort. We have to deal with it, really confront it, so that our children can live with a lot less weight. We owe it to them."

Sometimes you read a book and, when it's over, you wish that everyone would read it right now. This is one of those books. I want to talk about it. The book demands it.

This is such a needed story and something we need so much more of, discussing police brutality and racism in America in such a wonderful way. It definitely deserves more hype. Highly highly recommend.

This was fine as a story but more interesting in how the conversations have changed and not changed in the past 7 years since it was published.
