Bad writing, worse story

2.5 stars

Love this book and the story line. It is so sad what has to happen to bring family together.

This book wasn't terrible but was pretty odd. And at times it was hard to tell whose point of view we were reading. It's told in 3rd person but went from person to person so quickly. I have several nagging questions, like why is there a guest bedroom but Ray and Sasha have to share a room? Pretty strange that a boy and girl from technically, different families would claim the same room. There were also a few things that I didn't understand what was wrote. Almost like it was an inside secret that I wasn't part of. It's good for a quick read though.

I like the concept of this book. But i wish the story was stronger. All the voices and POV did add to my confusion. I was happy that it stayed a family story and did not really develop the romance between Ray and Sasha. It was a super quick read. Somewhat heartbreaking at points. I just wanted more of the family bonding. We had so much drama and just wanted a little bit more happiness and love at the end.

*I received an electronic ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Couldn't engage in the story, and found it difficult to differentiate the characters

A brilliant and engaging premise.  Sasha and Ray share half sisters, but have never met, due to the terrible divorce between Sasha's father and Ray's mother.  They also share a bedroom at the beach house the divorced couple continues to occupy.

There are a lot of mid-chapter point of view shifts in this book that I found distracting.  And I wasn't fond of how Brashares chose to wrap up the story.  It seemed too convenient, as in: "I'm tired of writing this story and need to be done."  Still, the idea of two kids more or less the same age occupying the same space year after year, and yet never meeting was a winner.

It doesn't happen often, but I am not finishing this book. It's confusing, with far too many character POVs, and the blatant sexism, and even some racism, is too much for me.
