I thought this would be more centered on Ephron herself, but it is more about the making of When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You've Got Mail. It is also to a lesser extent about Ephron's legacy as well as Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan's careers after starring in the latter films.

What a fun behind-the-scenes book about these three iconic movies. I agree with another reviewer, the title and subtitle do not hold up. This book does not strongly examine Ephron's movies in relation to the other romantic comedies or even the genre (only in the last chapter or afterword is it given any really play), but it strongly examines Ephron's path to directorial control over her films and what that looked like in practice. This book was much more about how Ephron excelled as a director and how she became a respected defender of her scripts in what was usually a boys' club. I enjoyed reading it and was not sorry it did not live up to its title but wish that the book had been forthright about its premise with its title.

2.5 stars. Light, fun, and made me want to rewatch You've Got Mail. Some interesting insights and lots of sources to provide interesting quotes.

A chatty behind-the-scenes review of When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail. You learn about how the strong personalities of Nora Ephron, Tom Hanks, and Meg Ryan worked together on these iconic films. If you're looking for an analysis of the films themselves, you will not find it. I liked the Us Weekly tone, even thought I wasn't expecting it, but it also wasn't as engaging as other books I've read that focused on the films through a critical lens.
