I ended up liking this a lot more than I thought I would going into it. It's short, but done very well in the limited space it has. I think the pacing was great, and there was a good mix of character history, cultural myth, and action. I loved that the integrated Polish text and monster names/lore were always explained, and in a commendably graceful way, so that I never felt confused or frustrated, and the explanations themselves never felt heavy-handed or clumsy. I loved getting to know and love the characters, and I think the developing relationship dynamics within the main trio were compelling and sweet. A really neat little story that has a fascinating world I wouldn't mind returning to in the future.

✨️ ARC Review ✨️ When Among Crows

☆☆☆☆

Thank you to NetGalley and Tor Books for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I've only ever read one other book by Veronica Roth, that being Chosen Ones. And I had a
similar reaction to this as I did that; it takes a bit for me to really get into the story, but once I do, it's fantastic.

Urban fantasy is probably my favorite of the fantasy sub-genres; I love the mix of magic
and real world. When Among Crows is exactly that, but with a heavy emphasis on folklore
that is very new for me. Roth's writing feels very folktale, amd it took some time for me
to get used to it. And with this being a novella, that means even less time for the rest
of the story. But when I finally settle in, that's when it really opened up for me.

It's a tale of pain and love, of fighting against what we've been taught and conditioned
or "born" to be, and finding a different way. It's split between three points-of-view, and
I loved each character. So much so, that I wish we had more time with them. Each carry so
much pain and act from a very real place. History and culture seep into every page.

While I don't love everything about it (I still find some of the writing a bit confusing
at times), it's ultimately a beautiful, cultural, story. And by the end, I just wanted
more.

It's not you... It's me.

No, but seriously, I think my dislike of this novella can be chalked up to my own inadequacies and not at any fault of the book. It was definitely too smart for me and much of what was happening went over my head.

I don't read a lot of fantasy or sci-fi and reading this in audio form was not the right call to make if I actually wanted to understand what was happening. Since I do most of my reading through audiobooks, it felt like a no-brainer. This is the first audio I have done in a while that I feel did not do the book/story justice. If you plan on reading, I would skip the audiobook.

I think this had a cool premise and reminded me a lot of the YA books that I read in middle school, namely The Crown's Game and This Savage Song. Monster fight club was a cool start, but the plot soon lost me after that.

I read this without reading the synopsis bc a Tiktoker I love (emmaskies) said to do that lmaoo It sounded really interesting from the vague description she gave and after listening to it I loved it!

This book needed to be just a hair longer to flush out some of the characters, like just one more chapter, but I really liked it as it is.

I will say that the male narrator— 💯!!

Also just a weird thing that happened in the final chapter, the paragraph about the leszy (?) was in there twice. Once at the start and once at the end. I think it was meant to be the final paragraph, but it was in there twice and it was really awkward. I feel like that should’ve been caught in editing.
