The Best of Me

Nicholas Sparks

3.7 AVERAGE

2.5 book annoyed me most of the way through, but the ending worked

I love Nicholas Sparks and I love this book. I predicted what would happen, kind of, but other than that it was another classic:)

OK - Sparks has redeemed himself somewhat from the monotony of his outline. The last book really wasn't that good. This one was better, although still followed his basic premise. His books are like train wrecks...you know it's coming, but you can't turn away from watching them happen.
challenging emotional mysterious sad tense fast-paced

Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

I wanted to re-read this book because it has been about 6-8 years since I read it in high school. It was a good story, but there were definitely aspects that bothered me this time around. It was very frustrating to listen to Amanda (FMC) flip back and forth on whether she should pursue a relationship with Dawson (MMC) again; the motivations of Dawson’s family can only be described as crazy; for how much Amanda’s children weigh on her decisions, it would have been nice to get more than 2-3 chapters from a single perspective. I still have no idea how Jared’s siblings feel about any if the family dynamics.
It was a good love story, and showed how much passion the characters have for each other, but I would have liked more than a weekend with them.

For me, this book was just.. too much. I know what to expect in Nicholas Spark books, and I normally love them. But this was so much drama in so many different areas, and of course it all "came together" in the end, but that was so obvious and predictable, it was all just a bit too much for my liking. Over the top.

(I will not rate a book that advocates an affair over 3 stars.)
medium-paced

I'm somewhere between "it was ok" and "I liked it".

Meh. I felt this was Sparks's worst book yet. The character voices were a little too unrealistic. The whole story felt rushed into making a plot in a really small fraction of time, which requires cutting out a lot of stuff that could've been written to make the story deeper and more honest. Touched a little too close to my own life, however.

maybe don’t glorify cheating

Not a favorite Nicholas Spark book of mine but worth the read.
