My favourite part was the little world-building reference to the shape of the bay being formed by the dragon taking a bite out of it when they betrayed it, but overall it was a very fun adventure with a conservationist angle

This book was a fun and enjoyable read. It talks about ocean pollution and how much we rely on and take advantage of the ocean. The book is set in this small harbour town called Haven Bay and there is a bad Mayor who created this Station that pollutes the ocean, the plot is about the consequences of that as well as some other stuff. I enjoyed the characters: Alex, Zoey, Bridgit, and Anil they were all fun and unique and each brought something different to the team and were all essential to the plot.

David Owen is better known for his YA novels, which tend to have a scifi edge. This is a younger book with a fantasy theme, so I wasn't sure when I started reading it what it would be like.

What it's like is brilliant.

David has taken the myths of dragons and given them a new spin. This is a fantastic adventure story, and I loved that Alex was able to see different skills in his friends and bring them together to form an effective team. Kids are going to really enjoy this story - and there's more to come!

I can't wait to read the next two, and it looks like it won't be too long - the advertising says that the next two volumes are coming next year, and I'm definitely going to be looking forward to reading them. I'll really enjoy finding out what Alex and his team do next.

This actually made me laugh out loud a couple of times. Some great fun, for sure - but sadly not strong enough to be a new fave for me.

For most of his life, the ocean has had a vendetta against Alex Neptune. So when an octopus and some otters drag him to the abandoned aquarium on the hill, he’s certain something must be trying to kill him. But…Alex meets the water dragon of the bay – a mythical creature whose legend is told all around his town. He must recruit Zoey, Anil and a host of sea creatures to help plot a heist to break out the dragon.

Likened to Percy Jackson, Alex Neptune is a fantastic adventure steeped in the myths and legends of a seaside town called Haven Bay. I could almost smell the sea air through the author’s descriptions and it made me feel like I was at home where I grew up (the Isle of Wight). As well as likening this book to Percy Jackson, I would also say it has similarities with recently published graphic novel The Aquanaut with themes of conservation, environmentalism and protecting the ocean. Alex Neptune, Dragon Thief zipped along at a fair pace with a well-balanced amount of description and plot exposition. I loved it and I’m sure it’ll be a hit in upper KS2!

Eponymous Alex Neptune is a funny well realised character, but the absolute stars of the show have to be the host of sea creatures. I love the otters and their silly antics – they will certainly make children giggle! And Anil’s thieving seagull is absolutely hilarious. I’m glad that they made use of his skills! Alongside Alex, his team totally feel like they shouldn’t be able to complete a heist, but the fact that despite all odds they succeed makes it all the better!

A brilliant mythical adventure that’s just completely fun! 5 out of 5 stars.

A super cute middle grade book with plenty adventures and friends working together by using each other's strengths.

I enjoyed the adventures of Alex, his friends and family and I can see a middle grade child having good fun alongside them as well.
