As with the other books that make up Ali Smith's Seasons Quartet, Summer follows a similar structure of navigating varied journeys with even more varied characters that eventually come together to show how connected we really are, despite whatever differences we may share.

I've enjoyed this thoroughly in all of Smith's books, but with Summer, the first 60 pages are that good that I really wish we got a whole novel dedicated to the characters we meet in the beginning. I found that once we turned our focus away from them, I wasn't as engaged or interested as I was, and only found myself absorbed once more when the story came full circle, and thus back to them.

Despite that, though, it's a beautiful conclusion to an incredible and ambitious Quartet that is a hallmark of our time and the struggles we face. I will always appreciate how Smith gives a human face to even the biggest issues, and how they do so with empathy, compassion, and what seems to be a genuine love for people and what they can be.

In a surprising turn of events given my track record of my previous Women’s Prize reads, the struggle I experienced trying to get into this book was actually fairly minimal. Some weird prose at the start and a change in narration style coming off the back of the Unsettled Ground audiobook threw me off a little bit, but once I got past that I found myself thoroughly caring. I really vibed with Ali Smith’s style of writing and the experience of trying to figure out how everything fit together (having not read the first three books in the series) enhanced the whole experience for me. It all felt very human which was exactly what I needed at this time in my life.

I don’t think I have anything groundbreaking to add about this book, but I really liked it quite a lot and am looking forward to re-reading it when I read the rest of the quartet!

I personally couldn't get into this book. There were large chunks I had zoned out during and had to reread. There were some parts/characters I found fascinating and others I didn't connect with at all, so I guess a mixed bag.
