A visceral depiction of mundane life and wanting more out of it with the element of sci-fi. I really liked the writing style of this book and easily put me in the main characters place.

this is definitely different to most books i’ve read. and i feel baffled by it. it’s a new take on dystopian fiction, i suppose, but the world isn’t really ending, iris just hates her life. it’s odd. reading this felt kind of comforting, though, in a way i can’t really describe. we, especially gen z-ers, complain a lot about the mundanity of life. of how we work 40 hours a week and social media has taken over our lives, but this book really challenges those beliefs with a society where none of it exists. and it sounds horrible. a small subplot was iris’s strained relationship with her mother. and all i could think was that it’s her first time being a mother. i don’t know if that makes sense.

the ending has me feeling a little muddled, but i also can’t imagine a better ending that would still be realistic and portray the same message. it’s the small things. family, friends, sand, wind, lakes, fruit, rude bosses, music, tea, silence, grass, unfulfilling sex, movies, kim kardashian, wine, dogs, sunday’s.

“There were two Eddies: the human made of meat and bone, and the one in her mind, who made her insides glow with warmth and longing.”

This book made me feel grateful for the life I have. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Sometimes the other side is just sand and blue skies.
