A decent start to the Ninth Doctor in prose, but the lack of characterisation for both the Doctor and Rose in particular makes for a very choppy read, as the supporting characters are much more fully realised and interesting than the main cast. The story itself has entertaining twists and turns as part of an interesting mystery and game of cat and mouse across 1920s London but sadly let down by the poor characterisation of the main duo.

Wonder if the space-age clockwork men from the Girl in the Fireplace were inspired from this story? The description in this novel are quite how they look, except for having faces/skin that appears to be human, of course. I liked this story, though I didn't care for the baddie much. There were a few inconsistencies with Rose & the Doctor, but loved the other characters!

I really like Nicholas' narration but the story didn't capture my attention as much.
