This book has a great story and I understand why romance was put in for the plot but the writing of it felt like a childish afterthought. I think the story without it would have been 5 stars

I learned several new words while reading this book. The elements that make this story are interestingly wound together.

I received this in a Goodreads giveaway. I have been done for awhile, and somehow forgot to review, so I think I have less to say than I might have previously. I loved that the characters were so diverse without it seeming forced. Codega did a great job balancing the fact that Moutheater would likely be a bit prejudice about certain things (especially race), without resorting to making her actively a racist or making it feel like you have to be worried that the author might secretly think those things. And I personally don’t think enough authors know how to do that properly (I don’t even know if I do, myself). My biggest qualm with this story, which has stuck weeks after finishing, is how often Benny waffles and says, “I can’t do xyz spoiler”, and then immediately says, “fuck it!” and does it. But then returns to complaining it’s a bad idea. I realize that isn’t unrealistic, but reading it became annoying and gave me deja vu especially when it was happening repetitively over one issue.

did not enjoy the writing style, too much focus on physical descriptions (for example, someone’s hair color being described twice within three paragraphs, and that not even being the first time(s) it was described. also didn’t enjoy to overall theme/message that
the mountain was evil/in the wrong when the humans were the ones mining it, especially if it was “alive”.
