This story has stuck with me. I enjoyed the historical aspects and the play on the tale of herbalist women being condemned as witches. The hidden room being found in present day while being used in the past was excellent. Overall a good book.

Some parts were beautifully,  lyrically written but I never connected to the story or characters.

Lush prose but overly saturated and a bit confused. There are some parts that were impressively written and had those moments been more focused on the story would have been better off for it. Some parts felt clumsy and inauthentic to the character’s backgrounds(
the scenes with Bennie and the cops, what was that all about? And some other inconsistencies of that nature that seemed a bit like a “whitewash” of a Black character
) voice and language is clear and present but the internal dialogue can sometimes feel awkward. I think that the story was crowded and had too many potential adversaries to make a  statement. There was a lot of potential here and I can see what the intentions were, but  I think that it got tangled up in itself and it choked out the impressive parts of it. ( ie bennie Moth, and her preacher man dad were standouts but other characters seemed like they didn’t need to be there). I do still think that even the most interesting characters(above ) could have been streamlined to be even more compelling than they are, as they suffer from the foliage growing up around them.

Not a bad book but not the write pick for me at the moment, while being in my small monthly reading slump. Too slow, not even things able to grasp for my attention.
But the writing style is fine!
