This was meh. A quick read with a somewhat interesting plot (very predictable) and it ended on a cliff hanger so I guess I will read the next one.

3.5 stars.

This was my first book by Roxy Sloane, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Cross My Heart is the first book in the Oxford Legacy series and cannot be read as a standalone.

Tessa gets accepted into Oxford University, but the reason she wanted to go there wasn’t for her studies. Something happened to her sister, Wren, while she was attending the university; something so horrible, it drove Wren to suicide. Tessa is determined to find out what happened and who it was that hurt Wren.

She gets caught snooping by one of the professors (Saint). He has a reputation for sleeping with students, so she’s rude to him. And when she’s late to his class, he isn’t very kind to her. But she has his attention, so he goes to her after the class is over. And he just can’t stay away.

Saint and Tessa had explosive chemistry, and Saint really fell for Tessa. He had been a player until he met her, and he didn’t care what his family thought of her.

This was a fast-paced book with some mystery and suspense. There’s also a whole British socialite and secret society thing (Saint comes from money and has other responsibilities he’s been avoiding), and it really added to the mystery of the story.

I can’t wait for the next book because this ends on a shocking cliffhanger!

For quite a while I had seen promos of it on TikTok and since I needed something quick and to the point (pun intended hehe) I decided to give it a shot. I was taken aback by the fleshed out characters and their motivations. It wasn’t just some PWP as it was advertised so that was a nice surprise.

The sex scenes were okay. Didn’t find any particular sexy because the dirty talk from the male love interest just took me out of it sometimes. Just unfortunate lol. But they were well-written and well-placed in the story. There was one sex scene in particular that had a red flag that I wondered if it would be addressed and immediately after it did by the protagonist. I also enjoyed that the couple acted like adults willing to talk through their issues and concerns.

The mystery aspect was truly what elevated the book for me. It kept me wanting to keep reading to figure out what exactly happened. It remained vague enough to allow the rest of the books to unravel it. One thing I will say, however, was that the plot twist at the end, I saw it coming from the very beginning. It was enjoyable getting proved right, but I’m also highly interested in how it’ll be resolved later down the road.

I read this because it came up on my tiktok as a paid promotional ad. I expected way more than what this was. I found myself cringing so much, something about a guy constantly referencing his c*ck gives big ick vibes. I want to know what happened to Wren but I’m not sure I can get through another Saint POV.
