Take away: Human cruelty in the name of sexual pleasure. Scudder was a bastard, but was it justified? You never find out about Bobby. A time before DNA was considered.
Narration: Joe Barrett - good. This is the second in a row by Barrett.

Listening to this book was a chore.
I'm glad I listened to this book.
I didn't want this book to end.
I could not wait to be done with this book.
Average, but better than anything I've written.
Above average, but not really a book to rejoice in having read.

The protagonist is a sober alcoholic. The plot revolves around the rape and murder of a woman as well as the rape and murder of a child on tape. One of the (dead) character's weight is mentioned whenever he is brought up. There are some racial slurs littered throughout the novel as well as some gun violence at the end of the book. I definitely didn't catch every content warning that could be applied to the book but this should at least give people an idea of how brutal this book is.
