I borrowed the first two Thora books I read from my sister. So, I started the series with the two most recent and not the first one. I liked them so I went back to start at the beginning. I'm not sure if I had started with this one if I would have kept on.
SPOILER********
This is clearly a first novel. The writing and structure are not as tight as the later books. Also, the "romance" portion felt not well thought out. It feels like the author knew she was writing a series and knew where the characters needed to end up so she pushed them there.
SPOILER OVER********
I haven't read the second book yet but I highly recommend the 5th and 6th in the series. The 6th in particular is creepy and good. I liked seeing where the characters started out but this fell in the first novel "meh" category for me.

I mean. The story was interesting enough. But the writer really needs to work on her internalized misogyny, because the way she described and characterized all of the female characters - all the way from the nameless group of cleaners in the first chapter straight through to Thora, the protagonist - is really quite appalling and not something I'd expect from a female writer.

I'd had this on my list to read for a while and finally picked it up at the library. It was ok and I kept going with it but it lacked the edge that some of the better Scandi crime has and I didn't particularly engage with the lead character, Thora, a lawyer employed by rich German family to prove that the person arrested for their sons murder didn't do it. I didn't like the relationship between her and the representative of family, and found the overall plot quite plodding and was glad to get to the end. The folklore element was interesting and I may try another but won't be rushing to read book 2.

More like a 3.33333. Rushed conclusion and some sorcery thrown in for a bit of shock value, but a fun read.

Eh, I’d give it about a 2.5. The story was kind of a mess and it was more gruesome than I prefer, but it was fun to read a book set in Iceland after having been there recently.
