Had to return it to the library but also the interpretation made it sound like it took place in a snowy Los Angeles which made it off putting.

I just kept waiting for something to happen. It didn't. Where was the suspense? Where was the tension? The most exciting moment in the book was the confrontation between Thora and Sigga's parents.

I loved the history in this book. Everything surrounding Malleus Maleficarum was fascinating.

But I disliked everything else about this book. I don’t know how much of what I disliked was because of the translation, but I suspect some of the cringe-inducing moments were. I found so many things awkward to the point that I sometimes thought I must have misread dialogue or interactions between characters.

The characters were just awful. The protagonist, Thora Gudmundsdottir, was thoroughly unlikable, fat shaming her secretary and calling her clients things like “pal” and “baker boy.” The secondary character had no real redeeming qualities and did things like touch his colleague’s hair in a sensual way (this was one of the things I had to reread because I couldn’t believe this was considered welcomed flirtation). And the university kids were all caricatures more than characters.

I really liked the other Yrsa Sigurðardóttir book I’ve read so I will continue to seek out her work, but I will be avoiding this series.

Interesting and entertaining.

An intriguing mystery! The little clues are so obvious in hindsight, but I had no idea what was coming next!

Book 1 in a series of novels with Thóra Guðmundsdóttir-a single mother of two who works as an attorney. She is hired by the family of a young man who was murdered. The family is convinced that the man convicted of their son's murder, did not do it and something far more sinister is responsible. The family hired a retired German police officer to accompany Thóra on her investigation of this case.

I did not enjoy this as much as, I Remember You, the paranormal murder mystery I read previously. But it was still very good. Yrsa's wheelhouse is character development and creating dynamic relationships between the primary characters. Amazing dialogue and sense of place.
Fans of murder mystery investigations with dark subject matter will enjoy this one as much as I did.

Poor writing spoils what little this book has to recommend itself.
