I always primarily knew Gary Paulsen from Hatchet, which I enjoyed. But I had no idea he had been an avid dog sledder and Iditarod competitor and was pleasantly surprised by what an honest, lively, and hilarious account of that time in his life this book was.

I thought it ended abruptly, but the stories throughout his journey running dogs were fascinating (some in a good way, some that made me laugh, and a number that made my heart hurt).
I loved Gary Paulsen books when I was a kid. I also wanted to be an Iditarod dog sled racer when I grew up - so this book felt like revisiting some part of my childhood. Which was fun.
I will say that after reading this, I have no desire to run the Iditarod anymore

An all-around entertaining and interesting read. Ended a bit suddenly and depressingly.
I bought this book in Alaska to get a feel for the state while I was there, and because I love Gary Paulsen. This is a whole different side to the man. It's not a book for youngsters, (some language and violence and adult subject matter), but is a great capture of just how insane the Iditarod really is. It's also a book that will really resonate with anyone who loves dogs.
Even someone with zero interest in the subject matter of this book would have to work hard not to be captivated by Gary Paulsen's writing. I was wholly involved in each scene, conversation, and event. The journey this book documents is not just insane, it is often unbelievable. I don't understand how human beings can live through some of the conditions and catastrophic events that are commonplace on the Iditarod trail. It is a world unto itself - one that only a few souls are born to contend with. But I certainly fell in love with it from afar. I felt alive and transported by the end of this book, and tremendously grateful to Paulsen for letting me vicariously experience Alaska in this way. I want to go there now more than ever.
One of the best books I have read. I mostly read fiction, but books like this could win me over to non fiction. This book is touching, surprising and funny. My favourite part was about the buffalo on the ice. Beautiful and moving picture of nature.
