Read this entire book out loud to my partner. Every chapter was rich with the most unexpected and expected ridiculousness from Gary who trained to run the Iditarod. As he trained he became fully immersed with the dogs. One with the dogs. The race itself was full of surprises, things he could have never trained for. Very exciting and engaging read.

I have always loved this book. There are parts that are so funny I’m cry laughing and there are parts where I’m nearly crying. So, so good.

Every choice Paulsen made stressed me out, and there were more dog deaths than I generally want to read about but Paulsen’s style of writing is very conversational and easy to read and it was interesting to learn about the Iditarod (something I knew next to nothing about before this).
