Impactful, eye-opening, heart felt - this story of 2 sisters who find out the other exists upon the death of their father. I stepped out of my comfort zone with this one, as poetry and novel-in-verse is not something I read often and because the author voiced one of the MCs - I opted for the audio book. It was beautiful to listen to and I'm happy to have chosen how I did.

This was great. It's the second verse novel I've read as an audiobook and it's definitely the best format for me. I really enjoyed Elizabeth Acevedo's writing and I think I would have struggled with getting the rhythm right if I'd read it physically. Acevedo narrates it herself alongside Melania-Luisa Marte and I thought they were brilliant. I often really like books with dual narratives and thought it worked really well here. I felt connected to both main characters and loved the way it dealt with complex family dynamics.

Das Buch “Clap When You Land” von Elizabet Acevedo ist eine herzzerreißend emotionale Geschichte, die wunderschön poetisch geschrieben ist. [CN: Sexuelle Belästigung, Tod, Victim-Blaming, Erwähnung von Gewalt gegenüber Schwarze, Lesben, nicht-binäre Menschen, und Zwangsprostitution] 

 

In diesem Buch geht es darum, wie Yahaira und Camino mit der Verzweiflung des Verlustes umgehen und wie schwierig es ist einem anderen Menschen zu verzeihen, den man liebt. Camino freut sich immer auf den Sommer, wenn ihr Vater sie in der Dominikanischen Republik besucht. Doch an dem Tag, als das Flugzeug landen sollte, trifft sie auf eine Traube weinender Menschen. In New York City erhält Yahaira die Nachricht, dass ihr Vater bei einem Flugzeugabsturz gestorben ist. Von der Entfernung - und Papis Geheimnissen - getrennt, sind die beiden Mädchen dazu gezwungen einer neuen Realität ins Auge zu blicken, in der ihr Vater tot ist und deren Leben für immer verändert wird. 

 

Es ist ein unglaubliches Erlebnis gewesen das Buch zu lesen, weil alles durchweg in Versen geschrieben wurde und Acevedo auch mit der Formatierung des Layouts spielt. Dadurch gibt es tolle visuelle Darstellungen und bspw. durch das Verteilen der Begriffe auf einer Seite verstärkt es die Wirkung von Verwirrung und Zerstreutheit der Charaktere. Was mir auch besonders gefallen hat, ist die Tatsache, dass einige Wörter, Phrasen und Sätze komplett auf Spanisch sind und auch nicht übersetzt wurden. Meiner Meinung nach stört das den Lesefluss nicht. Die Geschichte wird nicht aus der Sicht der weißen Mehrheitsgesellschaft erzählt und die Leserschaft wird nicht nur zum Nachdenken angeregt, sondern auch dazu die Welt aus einer anderen Perspektive zu betrachten. Außerdem gibt es in dem Buch auch queere Repräsentation! Yay! 

 

Die meiste Zeit schwankte ich zwischen “oh wie schön” und “oh nein! Das ist ja richtig schmerzhaft zu lesen”. Große Leseempfehlung meinerseits, wenn ihr Lust auf poetische Sprache und eine bewegende Geschichte habt.
