This book gutted me. It is incredibly emotional, heart-wrenching, and brimming with complex feelings.

And the writing is absolutely beautiful. Told in verse, the story uses language so wonderfully while remaining seamless to read.

I just. Thoroughly loved this book.

A beautiful tale of two young women from different backgrounds learning to heal from the tragedy of their father’s death and hidden secrets. The relationships that all the characters share are incredibly realistic and it’s really moving to see how the two main characters heal from their loss due their own doing but also due to the interpersonal relationship with others. I also love that we see both perspectives intimately, it makes you understand their reasoning and emotions.

Inspired by true events, the story follows two sisters who live completely different lives and dont know of each other's existence until the death of their mutual father. It is a book about grief, anger, resentment, love, fear and dreams that deals with heavy topics. It also highlights the difference between the living conditions and prospects of both sisters (the privilege of one, the poverty of the other, the struggles of both, their vulnerability when it comes to disgusting men, but also their strength and need for each other).

It was beautiful. I was surprised by the way it was presented (in verse) and I loved every second of Camino explaining and being proud of their traditions, her Tía, etc

I read this on audible in an attempt to read more stories from my island. The voice actor were pretty good although there was a little unneeded repeatition. Overall I enjoyed the book, it was told from two sides and you could really tell how different and yet similar they both were. I would have given it a higher rating if it wasn't for a few minor things that irritated me personally such as the way yahiras whole view of her father changed but i can also understand why it did. As well as the way Camino knew she was in danger and kept going to the beach. I understand it's not her fault that she was being harassed by El Zero and that was her place to destress but babe stop going there when you know he's out to get you and you don't have any protection anymore. Honestly though, I am excited to read some more works from this author.

This was a hard read for me. I think it’s important and we always need more diversity in the world. But it was hard.
