First in a series of dog stories this is a fair tale, whilst never reaching great heights, it tells its story well and engages the reader with it. As stated this won't go down as a book that is on one of those lists, but whoever reads it should enjoy it and be entertained and challenged to think about some of the issues raised.

pretty standard dog POV book. Not bad but not anything special either. Would recommend to kids who love dogs & reading and are hungry for more of both.
Moderate: Animal death, Medical content, Abandonment, Animal cruelty, Confinement, Excrement, Injury/Injury detail, and Vomit
Minor: Blood and Car accident
It's aimed at kids and all of the themes & other content in the warnings are handled in an age-appropriate manner. The main character, the dog Ginger, was born in a puppy mill, adopted by a negligent family, and spent some time as a stray. As such, animal abuse is one of the major themes of the book. No human directly causes injury to any animal or vise versa within this book. A child nearly drowns in the book but is fine afterwardsshesreadingoaway's review against another edition

Incredibly sad for nearly 2/3 of the book, but with a redemptive ending. Glad I just read this myself instead of reading with the kids. Puppy mills, bad owners, dog walkers, etc was just a bit much to overcome even though the ending is happy.

If you have a kid who loves dogs as much as my 7 year old does, then you will love this book. Even I was entranced... what's going to happen next to Ginger!?
A great series for kids.

Read this with my 8-year-old animal lover. Very sweet story. Loved how it touched on themes of responsible animal ownership and how animals might think.
