I am aware that this was written after the movie was released, but I still wish the author would have used the medium book better. This book mostly describes the visuals of the movie and doesn’t even try to give us a deeper insight into the characters. There’s virtually no inner monologue and so most of the characters are extremely flat and blend into one another. Also, they added the creepiest scene ever between Chris and Knox…

I picked up this book because Dead Poets Society is one my favourite films. Only when I started reading it I realized it was written after the movie and it really shows. The novel does a good job at describing the storyline but it lacks where the films sparkles. It does not encapsulate its essence. With the medium of the print, you can dive more deep into the story and characters, but this books does not do that. I would have loved to see more of Todd's and Neil's friendship, their feelings and opinions about the class and poetry. The film promotes a sense of nostalgia and longing for a greater future. I'm very disappointed in how this read turned out. I had higher expectations. Nevertheless the story is still timeless.
P.S. The s.a. scene was creepy and unneccessary.

Quote: "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life. To put to rout all that was life. And not when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."

my god do i have a lot to say. to start, the main reason this has 4 stars is because of my love of the film, which is my favourite film of all time, wont allow me to give it any less than 4, and not for the quality of the book.
i didnt really like the writing style, the author used the word angrily as a descriptor far to much as well as describing people as turning white. and i felt like there wasnt alot of emotion in it, and on top of that i felt like neil was slightly mischaracterized- especially in the beginning of the book. he spoke to neil so rudely- "you cant expect everybody to think of you all the time. nobody knows you. and you never talk to anyone." like that is just not my neil perry.
there were also very slight changes in dialogue that annoyed me, an example that springs to mind is mr keatings speech about why we read and write poetry, parts of it were changed and it just really threw me off idk. on top of that SO MANY great scenes were removes, in fact, nearly all of my favourite scenes just weren't in the book, like the "im being chased by walt whitman" scene, todd throwing his desk set off the rough, neil gazing at todd lovingly after he readshis sweaty-toothed mad man poem, neil and todd fighting each other with scripts,
todds yawp of neils name after his death,
etc.  and then the scenes that were added were abominable the main perpetrators were knox, instead of creepily petting chris and kissing her forehead, STARTS GROPING HER BOOB?????????????? why would you choose to change it to that WHY and to make it worse before he starts groping her he says, "carpe breastum, seize the breast!" how do you write that and think 'yeah thats good ill keep that??? the second scene that had me squirming was when keating had a pop quiz and decided to play a slideshow of pictures of women in lingerie and provactive poses. yeah no shit he was fired if hes doing that. again i have one question WHY??
and on top of all of this they took out all the gay shit like the cute todd and neil moments, charlie serenading knox with his sax, pitts and meeks dancing, meeks' "yes sirs" to charlie, etc, etc. all in all skip this tbh and just watch the movie and deleted scenes. it still made me cry tho and tbh i only really bought it so i could crite the thoreau quote on the opening page but i am still devastatingly disappointed in this

The movie was certainly better.
Better thought out and with scenes that really hit. I still got some enjoyment out of reading this book, but the movie was just so much more emotional. The characters more loveable.

And there were some weird scenes written in here to be honest. Like the part with Knox and Chris and the scene where Keating shows questionable photos to some teenage boys. The movie came first and had some great scenes that weren't put in the book but they added these weird and uncomfortable ones??? Like, just no.
