This was a tough but great read. Butler's writing and world building were incredible, and Lauren's fascinating narration gave this story heart. Lauren's family life and her descriptions of her neighborhood were vivid; it played out like a movie in my mind. The nuance of everyone's situation kept me engrossed, and I particularly responded to Keith's side plot. Once she's out in the world, Lauren's pragmatism shone through. A lot of the violence was hard to read, but it made every moment of survival more meaningful. Lauren's path reminded me of why I liked the beginning of The Walking Dead, a group of well-meaning people banding together to survive and do good in the world. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes post-apocalyptic stories or who likes strong black women as protagonists.
