My first British courtroom drama was a lackluster read, though there were some moments where Sarah Vaughan nailed the nuance of sexual assault and its impacts. The most well written character was James, a person whose perspective is conveyed through the characters of Kate and Sophie, and at times Ali. I think Vaughan captured his privileged existence under threat well, especially in terms of Sophie's reaction to the accusation. I was also interested by the quirks of English courts such as the barristers use of wigs and "my learned friend" Even still, it was at times hard to believe and hard to follow. I didn't like how the chapters switched from first-person to third-person between characters, nor was it very enjoyable to read all of the author's thoughts written so directly. It left nothing to the imagination, as evidenced by the repeat mentions of Kate's "asexual" and "undesirable" appearance to drive home an already clear point. While I would think those kind of descriptions are offensive and unnecessary in any part of the book (why use asexual??? what???), having this heavy-handed denigration of self by Kate in the first chapter didn't set a great tone. She and other characters were less developed than I hoped, and the revelation at the end of the book didn't shake me as much as it could've if the plot was a little more coherent.
