Anatomy of a Scandal

I decided to read this book after watching the Netflix trailer. I should have known that it wouldn't be good, but I liked the premise. Sophie is insufferable and I really don't feel sorry for her. I am not interested in characters who are one-dimensional. The author tried to make Sophie seem understandable and stable, but she comes across as cruel and selfish, both as a college student and adult. I feel deeply for Kate because I know what it's like to have an abuser go unpunished. James is sufficiently disgusting and repulsive as a rapist and the details of his trial and the verdict was unsurprising.
This book was 200 pages too long and I kept skimming paragraphs because there was a lot of useless information and descriptions. Overall, it was not an exciting or interesting book and it lacked structure. Kudos to the author for snagging a Netflix deal.

Unfortunately I did not find this as exciting and thrilling as I expected, however, that said, I did enjoy the story being told from the different viewpoints which slowly revealed more information.

I thought it was well-written, and presented a vivid and realistic image of old money and old names in Britain, power and privilege. I preferred the way in which the show rewrote the ending (and the flashbacks that predicate it), and I think Sienna Miller did a LOT for the roll of Sophie, which we maybe don't see here. Kate was marginally more substantial in the book because we see more of her backstory, but I still think she was missing something for me to fully believe that she inhabited the role of this high-powered prosecutor (though maybe that's not fair of me to ask, considering who she was attempting to prosecute).

3.5 stars for me - interesting characters, a bit too much soap opera, but I think that will adapt well when it's adapted. Looking forward to seeing the series (movie?) when it's made.

Good drama. Hard to like any of the characters.
