I found the book through social media and was immediately taken with the mixture of crime thriller, historical novel and romance.

Above all, Deanna Raybourn succeeds in creating a setting and characters that are rich in detail, drawing the reader into the story. As you know that this is a series, you soon start to wonder what will happen to Veronica and Stoker in the course of the first book.

The only point I deducted was because the pace of the story was a little off at times. In some places the plot dragged on, while in others you could hardly put the book down. This made the reading experience a little tough here and there.

Nevertheless, it is a real pleasure to read and I can hardly wait for the next two parts to arrive so that I can continue following the story of the two protagonists.

I had such a great time with this, Love veronica as a character and I enjoy her and stokers slow burn relationship. I'm super excited to continue the series!!

If you liked Enola Holmes, I think you’ll like this book. Both are historical mysteries with romantic subplots and although deal with murder and other serious crimes, still have a light and somewhat silly tone. I really couldn’t tell you why this wasn’t quite a 5 star read for me other than the boat scene seemed a little ridiculous to me. I loved the setting, characters, and the romance and I’m excited to see where the rest of the series goes.
