I think it is a great book about the consequences of the illegitimate adoption of babies. We read the book as a retelling of Anthony’s life from his birth up until the end. I encourage people to read it and understand the consequences that these kids experience due to the abandonment. On the other side,I was hoping to learn more about Philomena’s story and her own struggles, not so much about American politics. Overall, would recommend it and re-read it!
Engaging,
I liked this book. It is different than the movie in that the reader learns a lot about Michael's life.

While this was a great story (and not at all what I thought it would be), I have trouble reading about someone's life when the research doesn't include 1st person interviews. Using interviews with people in Michael's life to suppose what Michael was thinking or doing is a dangerous path, so while I was quite taken with the story, and Michael's deeply compartmentalized life and longing for belonging, I have to take much of this with a grain of salt.

Well that was torturous! I wish I had read the reviews before I bothered with the book. I agree with everyone else. It was misleading and poorly written. I did enjoy the movie but from a fictional point of view.
Torn between giving this 3 stars or 4 stars. Interesting story, but I really thought it would have more to do with the mother's search than with the child's life.
a story of an adopted child ... what intrested me is how Americans at that time were opposing hiv drugs research while the Europeans were more into solving the problem than shying out from it
A sad story with rather too many prurient details than seems necessary. Little about Philomena herself compared with a huge amount of political comment and amateur psychological analysis of the son. A small point, but the captions under the second lot of photos gave away the ending which was a shame.
I enjoyed this book, but I was surprised to see that most of the book is about Michael, not his birth mother. Honestly, I more enjoyed the way the movie focused more on Philomena's story.
This book ended up not being remotely what I thought it'd be - and it was well done. I wish there were more of Philomena's story, but it's a great (true) story.
