I listened to this book. The bulk of the story is about Philomena's son. A very interesting man and the story did shed quite of light on certain political events of the late 80's and early '90's. This was a good read overall.
Mis representation of the subject matter. I was interested in the reunion/ looking for/ and life of Philomena.
I got a review of US Republican politics.. while may be interesting to some, not to me.
I saw the movie after and quite liked the Steve Coogan screenplay.

After all the good comments on the movie I decided I would read the book first. Then I found out that in this case it seems the movie is so much better. I found excessive the descriptions of Mike/Anthony's love life... And at the end only in the epilogue does the author write about Philomena's quest. Maybe he should have named it differently.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but book seems more about the son's life and struggle than hers.
This is a great story, however the book felt highly fictionalized.
I was disappointed by the misleading description. This book is simply a story about an orphan and his life. It is not a focus on Philomena or her search.
I watched the movie first, so I had an idea about how the book would go. I do appreciate how the book focused more on the life of Michael Hess rather than Philimena's search. I could have done without some of the descriptions of Michael Hess' sexual exploits, but it was part of him and what caused him to contract AIDS. It's such a heartbreaking story.
An interesting read, but, as others have said, I don't believe that this can be considered an accurate portrayal of Michael Hess' life.
I find the title misleading too (I read the book titled 'Philomena'), as it was mostly about Michael, rather than his mother.
As the daughter of an adopted father, I connected with the issues in the book, but thought it could've appealed to readers' emotions more effectively. I also felt that the writer placed a unnecessary focus of Michael's sex life.
