despite containing much obsolete and difficult vocabulary which made it a tough read, it was still a touching and surprisingly progressive take on adolescence. there are a few strange moments and a confusing ending but german literature wouldn't be the same without this

3 1/2 Stars. As many others, I read this after falling in love with the musical. It was a very smooth read, but admittedly confusing--there were several times that it was difficult to fully experience the emotion of a scene without actually seeing it portrayed. Nevertheless, the poignancy of some of the situations and the authenticity of the characters makes this a play that definitely leaves an impact whether you completely understood it or not. I do suggest reading it more than once, however, in order to experience the full effect of the play.

Johann, Vanitas no Carte
